Finding Out You’re Pregnant Can Feel Overwhelming
When you see a positive pregnancy test, it’s normal to feel a rush of emotions—shock, fear, confusion, or even pressure to make a quick decision. But before taking any next steps, there’s an important piece of information you need: an ultrasound. Whatever you're considering, an ultrasound can give you a clearer picture, helping you make the best decision for yourself and your future.

What Does an Ultrasound Do?
An ultrasound provides key medical information that a pregnancy test alone can’t. It helps confirm:
If the pregnancy is viable – This means checking for a heartbeat and making sure the pregnancy is developing as expected.
How far along you are (gestational age) – The number of weeks you’ve been pregnant provides important information for understanding your options.
If there are any complications – An ultrasound can detect potential concerns like ectopic pregnancy (which can be life-threatening) or a miscarriage that may already be happening.
Why an Ultrasound is Important Before Making a Decision
Understanding how far along you are can help you better consider your next steps. The timing of your pregnancy may affect what resources and support are available to you. Knowing the gestational age can also help you prepare for what’s ahead, whether that means learning more about parenting, abortion, or adoption.
Why Viability Matters
According to the Mayo Clinic, about 1 in 4 recognized pregnancies ends in miscarriage (1). Without an ultrasound, there’s no way to know if the pregnancy is progressing normally or if a miscarriage is already happening. If the pregnancy isn’t viable, this can prevent unnecessary medical procedures and give you more clarity on what’s next.
Why an Ultrasound is a Safe and Free First Step
Getting an ultrasound is a simple, painless process that gives you important information about your health. At ICU Montgomery, ultrasounds are completely free, so you don’t have to worry about cost. Our goal is to equip you with the facts you need so you can make the best decision for yourself.
What to Expect During a Free Ultrasound at ICU
We know that coming in for an appointment can feel intimidating, but we’re here to make the process as easy and comfortable as possible. Here’s what you can expect:
A private and professional appointment – One of our trained medical professionals will perform the ultrasound and walk you through what they see.
You’re welcome to bring support – A partner, friend, or family member can come with you if you’d like.
How the ultrasound works – Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the pregnancy. A handheld device called a transducer sends sound waves into the body, which bounce back to form a picture. At ICU, we perform a limited obstetric ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy is in the uterus, detect a heartbeat, and determine gestational age. This ultrasound does not check for birth defects or reveal the baby’s gender.
Types of ultrasounds – Depending on how far along you are, the scan may be done externally (on your belly) or internally (a small probe inserted vaginally) to get a clearer image. Our trained medical staff will explain each step and ensure your comfort.
